Butterfly Kyodai
Butterfly Kyodai is a connect puzzle rather than a stacking one, and the difference matters more than it sounds.
In ordinary mahjong solitaire a tile is available if nothing sits on top of it. Here the tiles are flat and every one of them is visible, so availability is about the route between two matching wings rather than about what is buried. A pair you can see clearly may still be unplayable because the path between them bends one time too many.
How to play Butterfly Kyodai
- The board is a flat grid of butterfly wings.
- Click two wings of the same type to connect them.
- The connecting line has to be clear of other tiles, and it may turn at most twice.
- A valid pair is removed and the butterflies fly off the board.
- Clear every pair to finish the level.
Because the tiles are all face up, the game gives you complete information from the first second. Every mistake is a reading mistake rather than bad luck.
Tips and strategy
- Work the edges first. Tiles on the outside of the grid have the most open space around them, so their paths are the shortest and least likely to be blocked later.
- Count the turns before you click. A path that looks clear often needs three bends, which is one more than the rule allows.
- Clearing a pair opens routes for everything behind it. When two matches are available, take the one that cuts a corridor through the middle of the board.
- Watch for four of a kind. Pairing the wrong two can leave the remaining two on opposite corners with no legal route between them.
- If the board stalls, look for the pair nearest the outside rather than rescanning the middle. The centre is where paths die.
