The Daily Commuter Crossword was designed around a constraint that most puzzles ignore: it has to be finishable before you arrive.

That shapes everything. The clues are direct, the answers are words you already use, and there is very little in the grid that exists only to make the letters work. It is the crossword to hand someone who says they are no good at crosswords.

How to play Daily Commuter Crossword

One new grid a day. Fill every white square so that the across and down answers both read correctly.

Click a square to select it, and click again to switch direction.
Type your answer. The cursor moves on its own.
Arrow keys move one square at a time, Tab moves to the next clue.
Click any clue in the list to jump to its place in the grid.

Because the puzzle is built to be completed, a first pass through the clues usually fills a third of the board. That is by design, and it is the fastest route through.

Check and reveal are available for a letter, an answer or the whole grid.

Tips and strategy

Do the whole across list first without stopping to think hard. Write in what you know, skip what you do not, and only then look at the downs.
Trust your first instinct on the easy clues. In this puzzle the obvious answer is usually the right one, which is not true of harder crosswords.
Use the theme. If several long answers seem related, working out the connection hands you the rest of them.
Count the squares before writing. Most wrong answers in an easy crossword are right words of the wrong length.
