How to play Sheffer Crossword

A new grid every day, filled the same way as any American style crossword.

1. Click a square to select it and see the clue.
2. Click again to switch between across and down.
3. Type your answer, or move square by square with the arrow keys.
4. Tab moves to the next clue, and clicking a clue jumps to its entry.

Nothing has to be solved in order. The usual method is to run down the across clues, write in only the answers you are sure of, and let the crossings suggest the rest.

Check and reveal will confirm or fill a letter, an answer or the whole grid.

Tips and strategy

• Look for the clues that name a specific thing: a river, a currency, a card game. Those have one answer, and one answer is what you need to get started.
• Common short answers repeat across every crossword ever made. The more of these you meet, the faster every puzzle gets, and this is a good puzzle to meet them in.
• If two of your answers disagree on a shared letter, the shorter one is usually the wrong one. Long answers have more crossings holding them in place.
• Say awkward clues out loud. Crossword clues are written to be read, and hearing one often makes the pun obvious.
• Finish the section you are in before moving on. Jumping around a small grid wastes the crossings you have just earned.
