Snail Bob 7

Snail Bob will not stop walking. That is the premise of the whole series and the seventh game does not change it. He moves forward at his own pace, into whatever is in front of him, and he has no sense of self preservation at all.

You cannot control him. You can tap him to make him stop or start, and everything else you do is to the level rather than to Bob. Move a platform, flip a switch, open a gate, distract something that wants to eat him.

The fantasy setting brings knights, wizards and dragons, which mostly means the obstacles have more personality than in the earlier games. The puzzle structure is unchanged and still very good.

How to play Snail Bob 7

Each level is a route from the entrance to the exit, and Bob walks it while you clear the way.

  • Tap Bob to make him stop, and tap again to start him moving.
  • Click objects in the scene to operate them, buttons, levers, platforms and machinery.
  • Objects usually have one function, and finding out what it does is part of the level.
  • Get Bob to the exit alive to finish, and collect the stars along the way for a complete clear.

Stopping is the main verb

New players try to time everything with Bob still walking. Almost every level is easier if you park him somewhere safe and set up the whole route before letting him go.

He is patient. Nothing punishes you for leaving him standing still.

The stars

Each level hides collectibles slightly off the safe path. They are optional and they are where the actual difficulty lives, since the route that gets Bob through and the route that gets everything is rarely the same.

Tips and strategy

Solve the level before moving him

Look at the whole screen first. Every object that can be clicked is there for a reason, and levels are built so that the pieces have exactly one useful arrangement.

Working it out while he is walking means solving the puzzle and beating a clock at the same time, and only one of those was intended.

Ask what each object is for

If something is clickable, it matters. A platform that seems pointless is pointless in the position it starts in, not in the position it can reach.

When a level looks impossible, list the interactive objects and check that you have found a use for each. The one you have not used is the solution.

Order matters more than timing

Most failures look like timing errors and are actually sequencing errors. The platform had to be raised before the gate opened, not after.

Before restarting a level the same way faster, try it in a different order. That fixes more levels than precision does.

Use the hazards

The creatures in the fantasy levels are obstacles and also tools. Something that smashes a wall when it charges will smash the wall you need broken, if you are standing in the right place.

The series has always done this. When an enemy seems unavoidable, work out what it destroys.

Stars on a second run

Trying to collect everything on your first attempt at a level usually costs you both. The safe route and the greedy route diverge, and you cannot commit to either.

Clear it once, learn the mechanism, then replay it for the collectibles knowing exactly what everything does. That is faster overall and considerably less frustrating.

If Bob is walking into something

Stop him and leave him there. Nothing on the screen expires, and there is no score for speed.

Standing still while you think is the correct move at almost every point in this game, and forgetting that you can is the single most common reason a level feels harder than it is.

Why the series still works

Snail Bob has been running for years with essentially one idea, and it holds up because the idea is a good one. The character you are protecting cannot be controlled, so all the tension lives in the environment rather than in your reflexes.

That makes it unusually accessible. There is no dexterity requirement, nothing has to be done quickly, and a child and an adult can play the same level and both find it interesting for different reasons.

It also means the difficulty scales cleanly. A hard level is not one that demands faster clicking, it is one with more moving parts and a longer chain between the first action and the result. The skill being tested at level thirty is the same skill as at level three, applied to more of the screen.

Games built on reflexes age badly, because the audience for them narrows as the demand grows. This structure does not have that problem, which is why the seventh entry still plays like the first.

The other Snail Bob games

Snail Bob 5 is the love story chapter and Snail Bob 8 is the island one, both with the same rules and different scenery. For the patient puzzle style without a snail, try Save The Princess. More in puzzle and skill.

Frequently asked questions

How do you control Bob?

You do not steer him. Tap him to stop or start, and change the level around him by clicking platforms, levers, buttons and machinery.

Is there a time limit?

No. Bob can stand still indefinitely, which is why setting up the whole route before letting him walk is the correct approach.

What are the stars for?

Optional collectibles placed off the safe route. They are where the real difficulty is, and they are much easier on a second run through a level you already understand.

I keep failing at the same point, what am I missing?

Usually the order rather than the timing. Try the same actions in a different sequence before attempting the same sequence more precisely.

Do I need to have played the earlier games?

No. The rules are identical across the series and each game stands alone. The fantasy setting here is new but nothing about the puzzles assumes prior knowledge.

Is Snail Bob 7 free?

Yes, free in the browser with no download and no account.
