They look identical from the outside and they are not remotely the same game.
- Straight knowledge, where the right answer is the true one. Quizmania: Trivia Game, Millionaire Quiz and Adventure Quiz play it this way.
- Guess the crowd, where the right answer is the popular one. Guess Their Answer and Google Feud both score you on what other people said, which means being well informed is sometimes a handicap.
- Trick questions, where the obvious answer is the trap. The Impossible Quiz Classic and The Impossible Quiz 2 are built entirely out of this, and they are jokes rather than tests.
- Quick judgement, where the pressure is the point. Yes or No Challenge and True? give you two options and very little time.
- One subject, done properly. Flags Maniac is flags and nothing else, and Billionaires is exactly what it sounds like.
Quiz or trivia?
The two categories overlap and the line is worth drawing. Quiz is the format: questions asked, answers given, a score kept. Trivia is a kind of subject matter, the enjoyable fact that nothing depends on. So the trick question games and the guess the crowd games are quizzes and are not trivia at all, while everything in trivia is also a quiz. If you came for facts, start there. If you came for the format, stay here.
What to expect before you start
No account, no sign in, and no permanent record of how you did. Most of these keep a score for the session and forget it when you close the tab. Question pools are finite, so a long run will eventually show you a question twice, and some get there faster than others. None of this is a complaint, it is simply what a browser quiz is.
A word on the answers
Question banks are written once and rarely revisited. Anything that moves with time, a record, a job title, a population, can quietly go out of date while the answer key stays where it was. If a surprising answer is marked wrong, you may well be right and the question may simply be older than you are giving it credit for.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a quiz and trivia?
Quiz is the format and trivia is the subject matter. A trick question game is a quiz and is not trivia. A pub style general knowledge round is both. The trivia category holds the second kind.
Are the questions ever wrong?
Occasionally, and most often on facts that have changed since the questions were written. A quiz bank is not maintained the way an encyclopedia is, so treat an answer you are confident about as worth checking rather than as settled.
Can I play against friends?
Not through the site. There is no shared game and no lobby. Passing one device around works well for the question and answer games, which is how these tend to get played anyway.
Do the quizzes have difficulty levels?
A few ramp up as you go, in the style of a television quiz where the questions get harder as the stakes rise. Most simply draw at random, so the difficulty of a round is luck rather than a setting.
Are the Impossible Quiz games actually quizzes?
Not in any useful sense. They are a series of jokes wearing a quiz format, where the answer is usually a pun or a trick and knowing things does not help at all. They are here because everybody looks for them here.
