Wordmeister is a tile placement word game against a computer opponent, built on the shape everyone recognises: letters worth different amounts, a board scattered with bonus squares, and words built onto words.
The opponent is the reason to play it rather than a solitaire word builder. A tile game against yourself is an exercise. A tile game against something that will take the triple word square if you leave it open is a contest, and it changes every decision you make.
What it asks for is not vocabulary so much as restraint. The highest scoring word available is very often not the right move.
How to play Wordmeister
- Drag tiles from your rack onto the board to form a word.
- Every word after the first has to connect to letters already placed.
- Bonus squares multiply either the letter placed on them or the whole word.
- The AI plays its turn immediately after yours.
- Play until the tiles run out. Highest score wins.
Bonus squares are appointments
Each bonus square pays once, to whoever reaches it first, and then it is spent for the rest of the game. That single fact should drive most of your decisions.
A twenty point word that opens a lane to a triple word square is often worse than a twelve point word that closes it, because the opponent will take the triple and the difference is not twelve points, it is thirty or forty.
Rack management
Seven tiles will produce a long word roughly one turn in four. The rest of the time you are choosing between short options, and what separates those options is where they leave you, not what they score now.
Keeping a balance of vowels and consonants matters more than squeezing four extra points out of the current turn.
Tips and strategy
Scoring
- Short words on word multipliers beat long words on plain squares more often than people expect.
- Put the high value letters on letter multipliers. A J or a Z doubled is worth more than most whole words.
- Two letter words are how you reach a bonus square when nothing longer fits. They are worth learning.
Denial
- Before placing, look at what your word opens. If it puts the opponent one move from a triple, find somewhere else.
- Blocking is scoring. Closing the last open multiplier is often the highest value move on the board even when it scores little.
- The AI does not bluff. An untaken high value square means it could not reach it.
Endgame
- Once the tiles run out, neither side draws again. Count what is left and play out awkward letters early.
- A tight board favours whoever is ahead. If you are behind late, you have to open something, and doing it deliberately beats being forced.
Where players lose time
- Chasing the longest word available on every turn.
- Holding high value tiles too long waiting for a perfect square that never opens.
- Ignoring rack balance and ending up with five consonants and nowhere to put them.
