Two same-numbered tiles touch, you swipe, and they merge into one tile worth double - repeat that until you either hit 2048 or run out of room. The board is small, just four by four, so late runs are as much about managing space as about the arithmetic. It's simple to explain in a sentence and still easy to lose an evening to, since one careless swipe can lock you into a losing position.
