Each day's puzzle is built around an event that happened on that date, and the hidden words belong to it. The history is not decoration bolted onto a generic grid: it is what the word list is made of, so solving the puzzle and reading the note about the day are the same activity.
It is a small idea and it works. A word search is a pleasant enough way to spend five minutes. A word search that leaves you knowing something you did not know that morning is a habit.
How to play
- A new grid is published each day, with a short note about the date.
- The words to find are listed beside the grid.
- Drag from the first letter of a word to its last. The line has to be straight.
- Words run across, down, diagonally, and backwards in all of those directions.
- Clear the list to finish the day's puzzle.
How to play Daily Word Search
Reading the theme first
The note about the day tells you what kind of words you are hunting before you look at a single letter. A puzzle about an expedition and a puzzle about a treaty contain very different vocabulary, and knowing which one you are in changes what your eye picks up.
Direction
Roughly half of the answers in any word search do not run left to right, and your eye does. That mismatch is the entire difficulty of the format, and the fix is to scan deliberately by direction rather than hoping words jump out.
Tips and strategy
Finding words faster
- Hunt the rarest letter in each target word rather than the word itself. A J, Q, X, Z or K is a single distinctive shape to sweep for.
- Scan one direction at a time. Do the whole grid for verticals, then diagonals. Constantly switching is what makes a grid feel impossible.
- Double letters are the easiest thing to spot on a board. If a word contains one, start there.
Working the list
- Read the whole word list before you start. Knowing that four answers begin with the same letter changes what you notice.
- Leave the longest words until the grid is half cleared. They cross the most other answers and tend to surface on their own.
- Cross off as you go. The main cause of a slow finish is rescanning for words already found.
Bad habits
- Ignoring the theme note and treating the list as random.
- Searching for whole words instead of for anchor letters.
- Rereading the same region because solved words draw the eye back to it.
