Mahjong Firefly is mahjong solitaire played under a night sky, with the board lit softly and fireflies drifting across it.
The atmosphere is the selling point and it does change how the game feels, but it also creates the one practical problem worth knowing about: low contrast artwork makes tile faces harder to tell apart, and misreading a tile is the most common reason a player thinks the board is stuck when it is not.
How to play Mahjong Firefly
- Remove tiles in identical pairs.
- A tile can only be taken when it is free: nothing on top of it, and one of its sides open.
- Flowers match any flower and seasons match any season.
- Clear the entire layout to finish.
Free, not visible
Being able to see a tile is not the same as being able to take it. The tiles in the middle of a layout are usually visible and almost always locked, either by a tile resting on them or by neighbours pressing in from both sides.
Scanning for free positions first, and only then reading what is in them, is faster than scanning for matching pictures.
Tips and strategy
Read the number, not the picture
In dim artwork the bamboo suit is the trap. Several of its faces are the same green sticks in slightly different arrangements, and at a glance they are interchangeable.
Look for the count rather than the shape and the board stops resisting.
Dig, do not skim
- Take the pairs that uncover tiles underneath them.
- Leave the ends of long rows alone. Those tiles are free now and will still be free later.
- If a match frees nothing, ask whether a different legal pair would.
Tiles that appear four times
Most faces have four copies. When three are free and one is buried, clearing the two easiest copies can strand the buried one permanently. Take the awkward copies while you can and keep the accessible pair as insurance.
When the board dies
Mahjong solitaire layouts can genuinely become unwinnable, and no amount of looking will fix it. The signs are a small number of tiles left, all in single stacks, with each remaining face split across positions that block each other.
Restarting at that point is not giving up, it is recognising the position, and it is a skill in itself.

What counts as a free tile?
One with nothing stacked on top of it and at least one open side, left or right. A tile you can see clearly may still be locked.
Why do my two identical tiles not clear?
Most often because one of them is blocked, and second most often because they are not identical. The bamboo suit in particular has faces that look alike in dim artwork.
Do flowers and seasons match anything?
A flower matches any other flower and a season matches any other season. Every other tile needs an exact twin.
Can a mahjong layout become unwinnable?
Yes. If the last few tiles block each other there is no legal move left, and restarting is the right answer rather than a failure.
