Shanghai is the name that mahjong solitaire went by when it first spread through computers, and this version leans into that history rather than dressing the game up as something new.
It is the classic form: a stacked layout, traditional tile faces, and no clock. What you do with it is up to you. A round takes a few minutes if you want a break, or an hour if you want to sit with a difficult layout and work out the order properly.
The absence of a timer is what makes this version worth having alongside the timed cubes. Mahjong solitaire is at heart a planning puzzle, and planning is exactly what a clock takes away.

Free versus visible
The single rule people misapply is what makes a tile available. It is not whether you can see it. It is whether anything is stacked on it and whether one of its sides is clear.
A tile sitting in the middle of a row, fully visible, with neighbours on both sides, cannot be taken. Reading the board correctly means reading the geometry, not the artwork.
Why order decides everything
Mahjong solitaire is not a game you lose at the end. It is a game you lose in the first ten moves, when a convenient pair buries the tiles you will need later. By the time the board locks, the mistake is long behind you.

Tips and strategy
Getting started
- Study the layout before your first match. Two minutes of reading is worth more than any amount of fast clicking afterwards.
- Take from the top layers first. A tile removed from the top frees several beneath it.
- Identify the tallest stack and start working on it early, because it is where boards become unwinnable.
Choosing pairs
- When four identical tiles are showing, decide which two to take. The other two have to remain reachable.
- Prefer the match that opens new tiles over the one that is simply available.
- Long rows are queues. Clear from whichever end unlocks more.
Habits that cost you
- Matching on sight. Every match should answer the question of what it opens.
- Clearing all the easy edge tiles and leaving a dense centre with nothing available.
- Confusing visible with free.
