Real chess rules get turned into single-player puzzles: you need to know exactly how each piece is allowed to move, then use that to work across a board full of obstacles toward the king. Knowing a bishop only travels diagonally, or that a knight jumps in an L, stops being trivia and becomes the actual solving method here. It suits anyone who knows the pieces already but has never much liked playing full matches against an opponent.
