Remember the position, not the picture
The mistake almost everyone makes is trying to remember what a card was. The useful memory is where it was. Positions are easier to hold because they sit in a grid you can picture, and a picture you cannot name is still a picture you can point at.
Practical habits
- When you turn a new card, immediately ask whether you have seen its partner. If you have, go straight there.
- If you have not, turn a card you have never seen before as your second flip. Turning a known card teaches you nothing.
- Say the pairs to yourself as you find them. Naming a thing makes the position stick.
- After a failed pair, pause for one beat before the next flip. That beat is what fixes the two cards in memory.
Under time pressure
Do not speed up. Faster flipping produces more cards seen and fewer cards remembered, which is the worst trade in the game. Steady play with a plan clears a large grid more often than frantic play ever does.
