Premier Crossword

Premier Crossword is the big one. A new puzzle each Sunday, considerably larger than a weekday grid, with a clue list long enough that most solvers do it in more than one sitting.

That is why the two features that matter here are not the clues. Progress is saved, so leaving the puzzle and coming back does not cost you anything. And past puzzles are archived, so a week you missed is still available. A crossword this size is only enjoyable if you are allowed to put it down.

How to play Premier Crossword

  • A fresh grid appears each Sunday, and previous weeks stay available in the archive.
  • Click a square to select it. The matching clue is highlighted.
  • Click the same square again to switch between across and down.
  • Type your answer. The cursor moves on by itself, and the arrow keys move it manually.
  • Tab jumps to the next clue, and clicking a clue jumps to its entry.
  • A help option will reveal the answer sitting in a given spot.

Your progress is stored as you go, so closing the tab does not lose the grid.

Tips and strategy

  • Do a full pass of the across clues and write in only what you are certain of. On a grid this size, the answers you know are scattered, and that scatter is what gives you crossings everywhere at once.
  • Attack the long answers early. A fifteen letter entry touches a dozen other words, and getting one changes more of the board than five short answers will.
  • Work outward from the section you have solved rather than jumping to a new corner. Crossings are the currency and jumping around spends them for nothing.
  • Match the grammar of the clue exactly. Plural clue, plural answer. Past tense clue, past tense answer. This is where wrong answers survive longest.
  • Put it down when you stall. Progress is saved, and a Sunday crossword read again an hour later is a noticeably easier puzzle. That is not a figure of speech, it is the main reason the archive exists.

The shorter dailies are Thomas Joseph Crossword and Sheffer Crossword, and the full set is on the newspaper crosswords page.
