Zombie Typing
Zombie Typing is a typing tutor that does not admit to being one.
Each approaching zombie carries a word. Your weapon only fires when you type that word correctly. Miss a letter and nothing happens, which means accuracy is not a scoring bonus here, it is the only thing that works.
That framing does something a typing test cannot. In a test you are watching your own speed, which makes you tense and slower. Here you are watching the zombies, and your hands get on with it. People routinely type faster in this than in a drill, and the reason is that they are not thinking about typing.
The words get longer and the zombies get faster as you go.
How to play
- Zombies approach from the edge of the screen, each with a word written under it.
- Type that word to fire at it.
- A correctly typed word removes the zombie.
- Speed and word complexity both increase as you progress.
- Let them reach you and the round is over.
How to play Zombie Typing
Accuracy over speed
The weapon only responds to a correctly typed word. There is no partial credit, so hammering keys faster does nothing except produce mistakes you then have to correct while a zombie keeps walking.
The right instinct is the opposite of what the pressure suggests: slow down slightly and stop making errors, and your effective speed goes up.
Choosing targets
When several zombies are on screen at once, you are also choosing an order. The nearest one is usually the right target, but a short word on a middle distance zombie can be cleared in a second and buys you room to deal with the long word in front.
Tips and strategy
Typing better
- Keep your hands in position rather than hunting keys. This game rewards the home row more than it rewards speed.
- Read the whole word before typing it. Starting to type a word you have only half read is where most errors come from.
- Do not look at your hands. It costs more time than any mistake it prevents.
Target priority
- Take the nearest zombie first as a default.
- Break that rule for very short words. Clearing a three letter word takes almost no time and reduces the number of things moving towards you.
- When two zombies are equally close, take the one with the shorter word.
Building the skill
- Play short sessions. Typing accuracy degrades with fatigue faster than almost any other skill.
- Notice which letters you consistently miss. If it is always the same two keys, that is worth ten minutes of deliberate practice outside the game.
