Speed Typing Test
Speed Typing Test
A typing test with no scenery around it. Words appear, you type them, the clock runs.
The value of a plain test is that it measures rather than entertains. A typing game with zombies or falling blocks tells you whether you enjoyed yourself. This tells you a number, and a number you can beat next week is the only way to know whether practice is working.
Accuracy is worth more than raw speed here, and that is not a slogan. A mistyped word has to be corrected, and correction costs more time than typing carefully would have in the first place.
How to play Speed Typing Test
- Words appear on the screen one after another.
- Type each one as it comes.
- The clock runs for the length of the test.
- Speed and accuracy are both measured.
- Try to beat your own previous result rather than a target.
What the number means
Typing speed is usually reported in words per minute, where a word is counted as five characters. Around 40 is average for someone comfortable with a keyboard, 60 to 70 is fast, and above that is professional territory.
What matters more than where you start is whether the figure moves. Testing once tells you nothing. Testing weekly under the same conditions tells you whether your practice is doing anything.
Accuracy first
The correction cycle is expensive: notice the error, backspace, retype, resume. That is several seconds for a mistake that took a fraction of one to make.
Slowing down by ten percent to eliminate errors usually raises the final score, which is counterintuitive enough that most people never try it.
Tips and strategy
Improving the number
- Keep your fingers on the home row and return to it. Hunting for keys is what limits most people, not finger speed.
- Do not look at your hands. It costs more than any error it prevents, and the habit is broken in about a week of discomfort.
- Read one word ahead. Your hands can type the current word while your eyes are already on the next.
Testing properly
- Test under the same conditions each time: same keyboard, same seating, similar time of day. Otherwise you are measuring your posture rather than your typing.
- Do not test when tired. Typing accuracy degrades with fatigue faster than almost any other skill, and a bad result from a tired session tells you nothing.
- Take the median of three runs rather than your best. Your best is luck, your median is your speed.
How players lose
- Chasing speed and accumulating errors, which lowers the final figure.
- Testing once and treating the result as fixed.
- Practising only through tests. Ten minutes of ordinary writing with correct fingering does more than an hour of tests.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 words per minute is average for someone comfortable with a keyboard, 60 to 70 is fast, and above that is professional level. What matters more is whether your own figure moves over time.
Does accuracy matter more than speed?
Yes. Correcting a mistyped word costs more time than typing it carefully would have, so slowing down slightly often raises the final score.
How often should I test?
Weekly, under the same conditions. Testing once tells you nothing about whether you are improving.
Do I need a physical keyboard?
Yes, in practice. An on screen keyboard cannot produce a meaningful measurement.
Is the test free?
Yes. It runs in the browser with nothing to install and no account.
