Fillwords: Find All the Words

Our free daily · new every day Findish A word search with a new theme every day Play

Fillwords is a word hunt where the letters connect rather than sit in straight lines.

That is the difference from an ordinary word search and it matters. In a classic grid, every answer runs straight, so once you have the first two letters the direction is fixed. Here a word can turn, which means finding the start of a word tells you much less and the search stays open much longer.

Each set is themed, so the vocabulary you are hunting has a shape to it, and new combinations arrive with every game rather than the same grids repeating.

How to play

  • A grid of letters appears with the words to find.
  • Connect letters in any direction: horizontal, vertical, diagonal or backwards.
  • Release to lock in a word once it is complete.
  • Hints are available for a word that will not come.
  • Clear all the listed words to complete the grid.

Paths, not lines

Because a word can change direction, the useful question is not where does this word run but which letters near this one continue it.

That changes the scanning method. Instead of sweeping the grid for a direction, you find the first letter of a target word and then check its neighbours for the second, then that letter's neighbours for the third. It is slower per word and far more reliable.

Themes

Each set has a subject, which narrows the vocabulary before you look at a single letter. Reading the theme first is the cheapest advantage available and most players skip it.

Tips and strategy

Finding words

  • Start from the rarest letter in the target word rather than from its first letter. There will be very few of them on the board.
  • Check all eight neighbours of a candidate letter before moving on. A turning word is easy to abandon one letter too early.
  • Take the short words first. They clear letters out of the grid and make the long words visible.

Working the grid

  • Cross off as you go so you are not rescanning for words already found.
  • When a word resists, look at which letters are still unused. On a full grid, the remaining answers have to be built from them.
  • Save hints for short words. They hide better than long ones because they blend into the surrounding noise.

What not to do

  • Assuming words run straight. They do not, and that assumption is the main reason players stall.
  • Ignoring the theme, which is free information about what you are hunting.
  • Giving up on a word after checking only the obvious direction.

The straight line version is on the word search page, and Word Bird is the classic format with themed categories.

Frequently asked questions

Do words have to run in a straight line in Fillwords?

No. Letters connect in any direction and a word can change direction partway, which is what separates it from a classic word search.

Are the puzzles themed?

Yes. Each set has a subject, which narrows the vocabulary before you start looking.

Is there a hint system?

Yes. Hints are best spent on short words, since they blend into the grid more easily than long ones.

Do the grids repeat?

No. New word combinations are generated for each game.
